I'm now currently switching between Kate Bush (fuck you Tori, you copycat slag) and the new NIN album. It is horribly derivative, 'With Teeth', snatches from everywhere else. The reason why I loved 'Broken' and the 'Downward Spiral' was because it was so different so new - but maybe that was because I was so new to the whole alternative (I cringe at the use of THAT word) music thing. But I listen to Broken now and I still get that - that EDGE - that feeling that he meant it, the whole ugly mess that is Broken. It is hate filled, it is raw, it is possibly quite misogynistic, but fuck, it hits you right between the eyes.

Pivotal year for me music wise. 1994.

But getting back to this album... I was losing my love for NIN before 'The Fragile' horrible waste of two bloody CD's if you ask me. (Reznor should have just wanked onto the mic for that one and saved himself the bother of actually recording that piece of shit. Okay to be reasonable there are a couple of good tracks, but it doesn't save it from being a lemon.)

Anyway this album has that strong sense of, 'I've been here before' I think in some odd way it sounds a bit like Pretty Hate Machine, both sonically and lyrically. There is a place for Pretty Hate Machine, but it is very much Reznor's Juvenile album where he was trying to find his feet. It sounds very 80's to me, but there was that spark of originality that saved it. That fisting song at the end or something about the devil fucking him in the back of his car, lol.

But 'With Teeth' it's like he's come a full circle, and ended up quite frankly in pure shit-dom. The lyrics are banal, the music is mediocre, and I'm upset that I spent 20 bucks on it. I'll give it a better listen - it could be one of those albums that grows on you, but I doubt it. It all sounds so same-ish.

So final word: 'With Teeth' should be called 'Toothless-Gummy-Where-are-my-dentures?'. Also his picture looks old. I could never think of slashing him now.
